Part of Avengers: Doomsday will be in theaters earlier than you thought, as Endgame rerelease to include new footage of next MCU mega-event

At Cinemacon 2026, Endgame director Joe Russo revealed that Marvel Studios will be rereleasing the film "with footage that is set in the Doomsday story."

Here's something fans weren't expecting to hear:. Speaking about Marvel's historic 2019 mega-epic Avengers: Endgame, co-director Joe Russo (who's also working on the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday/Avengers: Secret Wars two-fer) had this to say:

"It’s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame."

Sorry, what??

OK, let's back up a moment here. Joe Russo was part of Marvel's already-lauded presentation at the annual Las Vegas gathering, where Avengers: Doomsday was one of the biggest-ticket items on display. As you might've already heard, Marvel Studios unveiled a first-look at the Avengers: Doomsday trailer to attendees, making the wait for the film's release that much harder. Easing that pain, though, will be the fact that some Avengers: Doomsday will be in theaters earlier than December of this year, with Disney's CinemaCon 2026 presentation teasing that the September re-release of Avengers: Endgame would come with a little bit extra.

What that extra was, was revealed this past weekend when Russo appeared as part of the Sands Film Festival in St Andrews, Scotland, where he made the statement above about the re-release.

"It’s an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way," said Russo of the re-release, according to Deadline, "And because the movie was so successful, we have an opportunity to re-release it. You don’t always get the chance to re-release because it costs money, so the fact that we can enhance the story of Doomsday by bridging it to Endgame and these characters that we worked with for years that we love so much, and continue their story: It’s a really unique opportunity."

What's currently unknown, however, is when fans will get the opportunity to see the new, expanded Avengers: Endgame in theaters. But trust us, you'll know as soon as we do. In the meantime, we'll just be keeping our ears to the ground as we await Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters December 18.

Consider this a meta post-credits scene for Marvel fans - the four key articles you need to read next to continue the thrills:

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
