Is Marvel planning to cast a new Black Panther for the MCU? Comments from F1: The Movie actor Damson Idris have reignited speculation that a different T’Challa might be appearing on the big screen sooner rather than later.
Promoting his new movie — in which he co-stars with Brad Pitt — on NBC’s Today show, Idris was asked directly, “There’s some speculation out there in the universe that you could be cast as the next Black Panther. Have you had any conversations about that? Yes or no?” Idris, laughing, answered “Yes no!” “By the way, yes no means yes,” responded Today’s Craig Melvin, to which Idris joked, “it could mean no,” before adding that he would say yes if the role was offered to him.
The idea of Marvel replacing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa has been floating around since a January report claimed that studio bosses were newly considering the idea after years of statements suggesting the role would be retired after the actor’s passing — an intent followed through to the point of T’Challa himself being revealed to have died ahead of the events of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The introduction of the multiverse — and the fact that it makes an infinite amount of alternate Black Panthers available to filmmakers — means that the death of the mainstream MCU Black Panther is an easily-fixed problem, and a replacement is ready to hand should Marvel Studios really want one. But could that really be Damson Idris?
We’ll likely have to wait until Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 — or perhaps even 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars — to find out more. But in the meantime, Idris is likely enjoying the attention the rumors bring. Watch the interview below:
F1: The Movie is in theaters June 27.
