How Black Phone director/co-writer Scott Derrickson convinced Blumhouse to do a sequel, and undo the death of the Grabber

Blumhouse Productions greenlit Black Phone 2 because they realized the Grabber was too good for just one movie

If you’ve seen the 2021 film The Black Phone, you might be wondering how they were able to make a sequel. After all, the film ends with the Grabber’s death, yet Black Phone 2 is currently playing in theaters. It turns out that Blumhouse Productions thought the Grabber, dead or not, still had some unexplored potential.

“What really inspired me to make a sequel was the great Scott Derrickson,” Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blum says during a panel at New York Comic Con. “I got a very happy phone call [from Scott] two or three months after the first movie came out, and he said, ‘You know, I’ve been thinking about this, and I think two things. I think there’s a much bigger story to tell and a much bigger universe in Black Phone.’”

“The second thing he said, which I thought and I think you guys will all agree, is that the Grabber is kind of building in excitement, and specialness, and horribleness, and evilness in a way that he can’t be through in one movie. So, when he said that, I said, 'Well, we would love to make a second one!' and 'Get writing!' And he did, and that’s the movie you guys will see very soon.”

Black Phone 2 is currently playing in theaters nationwide.
