David Tennant "would have quite liked" to be Marvel Studios' Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four: First Steps, but is happy for Pedro Pascal and "very pleased he exists"

David Tennant has enjoyed a pretty wide variety of roles over the years. From Doctor Who to Duck Tales to the MCU, he’s enjoyed a long period of success that would be the envy of any actor in the business. But there is one actor that he feels a hint of jealousy toward and that is Pedro Pascal, simply because David Tennant had his eye on the role of Reed Richards before Pascal was cast in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
When asked at MCM Comic Con 2025 if there were any superheroes or supervillains he wanted to play, David Tennant quickly said that he had good luck on the villain front.
“Well, in terms of supervillains, I got the best one with Kilgrave. I was quite pleased with that. That worked out quite nicely for me. I was quite happy with that.”
On the hero side, he does feel that he missed his chance on his role of choice.
“In terms of superheroes, I don’t know. I did slightly have my eye on Reed Richards and unfortunately, it looks like they’ve gone in a different direction. Although, if it has to be someone, I’m very happy for it to be Pedro Pascal, frankly… I would have quite liked to have liked to be Reed Richards.”
This doesn’t mean that David Tennant isn’t as big a fan of Pedro Pascal as we all are, though. “He’s Mr. Fantastic in every sense of the word. I think Pedro Pascal’s great. I’m very, very pleased that he exists.”
While it is hard to imagine a role for David Tennant other than Kilgrave in the MCU, we’d love to have seen his take on Reed Richards. If only that pesky Pedro Pascal hadn’t gotten in the way.
