DC Studios is going to focus more on the single story than a multi-movie arc, says boss (and Superman director) James Gunn
To avoid the overwhelming feeling of trying to catch up with comic books after a few months off, James Gunn wants to focus on individual stories first and foremost

Coming from the ever-growing universe that is the MCU, you’d expect James Gunn to want to bring the same focus on overarching storylines to the new DCU he’s putting together at DC Studios. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Rather than try to blow our minds with countless crossover events every few years, James Gunn wants to focus on each individual story first and foremost.
He explained his rationale during a recent interview. “At the end of the day, the single story is the most important thing,” James Gunn explained. “And then that’s followed by the larger, overarching story.”
The reason for this approach stems from James Gunn’s love of comics. “I love comic books, but sometimes I do get a little busy and crazy, you know,” he said. “If I fall out for a couple of months, and then I’m back in, I’m like, ‘What in the… Who is that person? What’s going…’ You know, it’s great that we have these big, overarching stories in comics that, you know, last for a long time with tons of characters. I’m really enjoying the Justice League Unlimited stuff now. It’s totally fun that all these characters are on the Watchtower together… It’s really fun, but at the same time, I also think that I still, you know, want to make sure that we’re telling these smaller stories that are not small but singular.”
While it is still too early in the new DCU to tell how strictly Gunn will adhere to this “smaller stories over overarching plots” philosophy, it certainly feels like he isn’t planning to set up something on the scale of Avengers: Endgame anytime soon.
