Denis Villeneuve may be bringing the Messiah to Dune, but James Bond is his "sacred territory"

On the heels of being announced as their next director, Villeneuve recounts his history with, and reverence for, the James Bond films

Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond movie.

The news comes from Amazon MGM Studios themselves, in an announcement published June 25. Mike Hopkinst, head of the studio that holds the rights to the long-running superspy franchise, says, "We are honored that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond’s next chapter. He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself."

That's certainly true - from his grandiose Blade Runner sequel to his tackling of the Dune franchise, Villeneuve has proven that he knows what to do with beloved franchises. All the more so when he's the one doing the beloving.

"Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007," Villeneuve recounts in a statement, "I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory."

And in the same way that Villeneuve is committed to respecting the past, he's also aware that he'll be setting a precedent for the many, many James Bond films that are sure to come after his.

"I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come," the Dune: Messiah directot says, "This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust."

All of the previous James Bond films are streaming on Prime Video
