New mask, same slash: Horror icon Jason Voorhees has been revamped (by Walking Dead legend Greg Nicotero) ahead of his own cinematic universe

Sorry Met Gala, the new Jason Voorhees redesign is what the cool kids are looking at now

For a character who's so known by one specific look, Jason Voorhees has actually sported quite a few visual aesthetics through the Friday the 13th movies. First, he was a drowned child's corpse. Then, he was a killer with a burlap sack over his head. It was only after that that Jason got the famous hockey mask style, and even after that, he switched it up again fro Jason X.

But now, the Friday the 13th rights holders have unveiled an all-new, corporate-official look for Jason Voorhees's future appearances, and even though the redesign itself isn't completely new, it was handled by a legend of horror movie effects: that is, Greg NIcotero, senior producers and makeup lead on AMC's The Walking Dead.

Get your first look at the official new Jason Voorhees below.

This news comes from those horror hounds at Bloody Disgusting, who published a look at the slasher villain's grimy new garb May 15, along with a statement from the president of Horror Inc. (who own Friday the 13th IP), Rob Barsamian.

"We strive to maintain Jason’s original essence," said Barsamian, "While continuing to move toward the future with a defined look and feel that takes Jason into his next chapter. We’re also working with both familiar and fresh franchise voices to strike that balance [...] We gave Greg [Nicotero] our new 13-hole mask and worked together on this full body look that embodies classic Jason. He’s a strong, towering and terrifying slasher with a machete, his weapon of choice."

We should remind our viewers at home that, despite this update, it's unlikely we're going to see it onscreen in the near future. The next Friday the 13th project is the Linda Cardinelli-starring Crystal Lake from A24 and Peacock, which is set before Jason's drowning incident and thus his adoption of his killer hockey masked persona.

Still, it's comforting to know that, down the line, this is the guy waiting for us. Though we absolutely would not say no to Nicotero taking a crack at a new Jason X design...
