It has been nearly 25 years since Russell Crowe shouted, “Are you not entertained?” and shoved that quote into our lexicon forever. Now, Gladiator II is about to come out and continue that lofty legacy. We don’t know yet if the upcoming sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic film is going enhance or dilute the original, but we do know that the age rating for Gladiator II is very similar to the first.
What is the age rating for Gladiator II in the US?
Just like the first movie, the MPA has given Gladiator II an age rating of R, citing its “strong bloody violence” as the reason for the rating. While the overall rating hasn’t changed since Gladiator, the original was rated R for “intense, graphic combat.”
The different language used to describe Gladiator II likely doesn’t reflect a huge change in the actual content of the movie. The MPA isn’t typically very consistent with how it describes movies. Considering that it has been over 20 years since Gladiator came out, it isn’t surprising that the focus is on violence rather than actual combat.
What is the age rating for Gladiator II in the UK?
The UK’s governing body that awards film ratings, the BBFC, hasn’t given Gladiator II an official rating as of October 9, 2024. This isn’t unusual – there are still several weeks until the movie is due out, after all. The closest that we’ve seen is a rating for the trailer, which is listed as 12A.
The original Gladiator was rated 15 in the UK, which is largely similar to being rated R in the US, so we expect Gladiator II to be rated 15 as well. However, standards have changed over the years, so there is a small possibility that the rating might change. We simply have to wait and see.
