Warner Bros. Pictures has found no shortage of success bringing big brands to the big screen in recent years, with both Barbie and A Minecraft Movie defying naysayers to become massive box office draws. WB has already found its next big thing, announcing a Hello Kitty movie that will arrive in theaters in 2028.
The announcement was made via Instagram, with a post featuring the Sanrio character’s iconic bow on top of the WB logo painted on the (similarly iconic) studio water tower, with a caption reading, “Hello Hollywood.” The movie is dated for July 21, 2028.
Sanrio has been trying to transform Hello Kitty into a movie for more than a decade at this point, per the Hollywood Reporter. The new Warner Bros. deal follows an earlier 2019 announcement that New Line was partnering with the company on the project; New Line, another movie studio owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, is officially co-producing the new movie with Warner Bros. Animation.
Plot details are intentionally being kept under wraps by this point, but WB has let slip something interesting: the screenplay for the movie comes from Dana Fox, who’s likely best known to audiences as the writer behind screenplays for both Wicked and the upcoming Wicked For Good. Does that mean we should be expecting a musical…? After all, Hello Kitty doesn’t even have a mouth…
The as-yet-untitled Hello Kitty movie will be released July 21, 2028.
