Greetings Popversians, and welcome to Lore Corner! Each week, video producer Ashley V. Robinson and staff writer Grant DeArmitt are going to take you deep into the pre-existing lore behind some of pop culture's most exciting adaptations, such as the high-flying, higher-fantasy adventure How to Train Your Dragon. Enjoy!
Though this summer's How to Train Your Dragon is the first live-action movie to bear the name, there's already a whole universe of characters that exist within the story, thanks to the animated DreamWorks films of the same name. Heck, there were characters that existed even before that, in the series of How to Train Your Dragon children's novels by Cressida Cowell.
As you can probably surmise, that means there are a lot of names (both human and dragon) that you're going to have to keep straight headed into the live-action remake of the 2010 hit fantasy film. And that's why, for this edition of Lore Corner, we've put together Popverse's How to Train Your Dragon character guide for both your information and reading pleasure.
Let's begin.
How to Train Your Dragon - The Dragon Riders
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third

- Originally voiced by: Jay Baruchel
- Played in the remake by: Mason Thames
- Preferred dragon: Toothless
- Personality: The son of Stoick the Vast and rightful heir to chief of the Hooligan tribe, Hiccup begins the HTTYD saga as uncertain of himself due to his lack of strength and his father's commanding presence. But via his friendship with dragon Toothless, Hiccup becomes the leader and hero that not only his tribe, but his entire home isle of Berk, needs.
Astrid Hofferson

- Originally voiced by: America Ferrera
- Played in the remake by: Nico Parker
- Preferred dragon: Stormfly
- Personality: Love interest of Hiccup, Astrid is bold, sure of herself, and fiercely loyal to her allies. Originally known as Camicazi in the HTTYD novels, Astrid is primary rider of dragon Stormfly, a beast that shares her bravery and physical skill.
Fishlegs Ingerman

- Originally voiced by: Christopher Mintz-Plasse
- Played in the remake by: Julian Dennison
- Preferred dragon: Meatlug
- Personality: Best pal of Hiccup, Fishlegs is large where his friend is small, but both begin the saga pretty equally untalented. Fishlegs is clumsy and comes off as not the brightest, but has a heart that's even larger than he is, as evidenced by his relationship with dragon Meatlug.
Stoick the Vast

- Originally voiced by: Gerard Butler
- Played in the remake by: Gerard Butler
- Preferred dragon: Thornado
- Personality: Physically imposing and supremely self-confident, Stoick is the chief of the Hooligan tribe and father of Hiccup. Steeped in viking tradition, Stoick begins the saga as extremely mistrustful of dragons, but comes around to them once his son proves their worth.
Gobber the Belch

- Originally voiced by: Craig Ferguson
- Played in the remake by: Nick Frost
- Preferred dragon: Grump
- Personality: A close friend of Stoick and mentor/uncle figure to Hiccup, Gobber coms off as slightly crotchety, but has the best in mind for his friends and fellow vikings. He has seen his share of battles but has come through mostly in one piece, save for his lost hand and leg, which he replaces with tools.
Snotlout Jorgensen

- Originally voiced by: Jonah Hill
- Played in the remake by: Gabriel Howell
- Preferred dragon: Hookfang
- Personality: Jockish and proud, Snotlout can be an arrogant thorn in the side of the sgaa's heroes, but ultimately ends up doing what's right. He is more of a traditional viking than his fellow dragon riders, and thus, is apt to consider himself more suited to tasks they would better handle.
How to Train Your Dragon - The Dragons

- Dragon species: Night Fury
- Personality: Toothless is brave, loyal, and big-hearted, accepting a human best friend despite the years of animosity between the two species.

- Dragon species: Deadly Nadder
- Personality: Stormfly is agile, quick, and a useful steed in both battle and dragon racing.
Hookfang

Of course, there are plenty more dragons and dragon riders that appear in the vast DreamWorks trilogy, to say nothing of the scaly, winged pals we meet in the DreamWorks Dragons TV series. However, the above should at least give you a good idea of what to expect when you sit down for the franchise's live-action reimagining this summer.
How to Train Your Dragon soars into theaters June 13.
