I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot is directly inspired by Steven Spielberg's Jaws, says the director & co-writer

It makes sense that, for a franchise with a maritime killer, the I Know What You Did Last Summer creatives would take inspiration from Stephen Spielberg's ultimate in oceanic terror

Nearly thirty years after the first I Know What You Did Last Summer movie introduced the world to the Fisherman killer, there's been a lot of movement in the horror genre. So it would be understandable that, as they seek to reboot the franchise, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and cowriter Sam Lansky would take inspiration from the "Get Out"s of the world, perhaps the "Barbarian"s, maybe even the "Jennifers Body"s.

But no - as they recently shared with interviewer Meredith Borders in the latest issue of Fangoria magazine, Robinson and Lansky turned their gaze to a time even before the 1997 original for the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. Their gory guiding light, they say, is Stephen Spielberg's Jaws.

"It's so crowd-pleasing," says Lansky, "And so fun, and action-packed, but also feels sort of elevated and artistic in its way. It doesn't feel disposable; it doesn't feel like a product. It really feels like it is both a capital-M Movie and a capital-F Film."

Perhaps just as much as they're keeping in mind the artistic value of the Spielberg horror staple, the I Know What You Did Last Summer team are presumably also considering the im[act that the film had with audiences. Remember, Jaws is considered the first real blockbuster, and similar hopes for this reboot come across in the another statement by director Robinson.

"I want everyone to grab all their friends," she says, "Buckle the fuck up, and enjoy the wild ride."

I Know What You Did Last Summer slashes into theaters July 18.
