Amazon wants its next James Bond movie to star a young British actor - How does this match up with previous Bond actors' ages?

According to a new report, your next James Bond will be a good decade younger than most anyone we have watched before.

James Bond may have had no time to die in the final Daniel Craig movie, but he doesn't have the time to grow old under Amazon MGM Studios' watch.

A new report from Variety states that Amazon is looking at "British actors under the age of 30" for the part of 007, even opening up that up to the British Commonwealth. Just don't expect a Canadian to be considered for the part. So far, the names in the running are Tom Holland (29 years old), Harris Dickinson (29 years old), and noted Australian Jacob Elordi (28 years old). Maybe, since the studio already has a North American directing the film (Canadian Denis Villeneuve), Canada's proximity to the United States is canceling out the country's place in the British Commonwealth, in the studio's eyes. I don't know, I don't make the rules, I think all of this is very funny.

Amazon MGM's decision to look at actors under 30 is bound to raise a few eyebrows - all two of mine - because of how the role has traditionally gone to older chaps in the past. Let's consider the data:

  • Daniel Craig - age 38 at the time of Casino Royale
  • Pierce Brosnan - age 41 at the time of Goldeneye
  • Timothy Dalton - age 41 in The Living Daylights
  • Roger Moore - age 45 in Live and Let Die
  • George Lazenby - age 29 in On Her Majesty's Secret Service
  • David Niven - age 56 in Casino Royale
  • Sean Connery - age 32 in Dr. No

George Lazenby might have been under 30, but with all due respect, the guy looked 40 at least. James Bond is supposed to have a bit of a reputation, so I would be curious to see how Amazon MGM goes about establishing that with such a baby-faced Bond.

This brings me to my next point: did the COVID-19 pandemic happen in the world of Bond? Because if so, then I really won't be able to buy a younger Bond. How the hell are you supposed to build an illustrious career in espionage when everyone is social distancing at the fancy gala, and meetings are taking place over Zoom? Maybe I'm making a mistake by expecting things to make sense in a Bond movie in the first place.
