Avatar director James Cameron has made a "blood oath" to make a second Alita: Battle Angel movie (and wants to make a third)

Once Avatar: Fire and Ash is done, James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have sworn to make a least Battle Angel Alita 2, but hope for another sequel to the 2019 cult movie

No one really expected a live-action Alita: Battle Angel to work, yet the 2019 film, written and produced by Avatar director James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez, was full of promise. Perhaps the biggest promise it made was in that teaser at the end that hinted at a sequel. A sequel that has never materialized. Now, more than six years after Alita: Battle Angel came out, James Cameron is no closer to making the sequel, but he has shared the depths of his and Robert Rodriguez’s commitment to make it happen… eventually.

“I appreciate the loyalty of Alita fans,” James Cameron told Empire Magazine in a recent interview. “Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie. In fact, we’re thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film, but we’ll be satisfied if we can make one more. And we’re making progress on that.”

Part of the problem is that Cameron has been busy making Avatar movies for years now and has more on the way, but he’s hopeful that his new proximity to Robert Rodriguez will help spur the two into action. “Now that I have a home in Austin, Texas, about three miles from [Robert’s] place, I think we’ll probably get more serious about that as soon as I wrap the mix here [on Avatar: Fire and Ash] in a few weeks.”

As far as promises go, a blood oath is pretty serious. Right up there with spit-shaking and just below a pink-swear, so that’s as good a sign as we’ve had that Alita: Battle Angel 2 is in the works.

Alita: Battle Angel is currently streaming on Hulu.
