Marvel's Hawkeye, Jeremy Renner, claims he died briefly during the 2023 snowmobile accident that broke 38 of his bones

We'd make a joke about how Avengers can't be killed, but we're just generally impressed at how resilient Jeremy Renner is.

While Hawkeye probably isn’t anyone’s choice for the toughest Avenger, his actor Jeremy Renner is making a powerful case for being the toughest man in Hollywood. His well-publicized Snowcat accident on New Year's Eve 2023 saw him break more than two dozen bones. Now, in his new memoir, Renner claims his injuries were so bad he actually died in the snow.

The Avengers star was run over by a Snowcat, a 14,300-pound vehicle commonly used at ski resorts, after saving his nephew from being hit by the vehicle. He broke 38 bones and had to have his eye duct-taped back into his skull after the accident, but his new book goes into new detail about just how intense his injuries were.

After being hit by the vehicle Renner says that he believes he died while lying in the cold while his nephew ran off to seek help. “After about 30 minutes on the ice, breathing manually for so long, an effort akin to doing 10 or 20 push-ups per minute for half an hour… that’s when I died,” he writes in his new memoir My Next Breath. He doesn’t give great details about what comes after, however. “I could see my lifetime. I could see everything all at once. In death, there was no time, no time at all, yet it was also all time and forever.”

While Renner describes death as “an exhilarating peace,” he also explains that something made him hold on to life. “I didn’t fucking die, so the celebration of New Year becomes a recognition of the depth of the love in our family.”
