It's official: Josh Brolin will NOT be Green Lantern Hal Jordan in the new DCU
In brightest day, in blackest night; he doesn't want the part, alright?
Popverse's top stories of the day
- My (pseudo) apology to My Dress-Up Darling
- The Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont has come out of retirement for Stranger Things' final Netflix season
- Why both Louise Simonson and Chris Claremont "weren't sure" Marvel's New Mutants was a good idea
Last week, the internet was alight (heh) with the rumor that Thanos himself, Josh Brolin, was offered the role of Hal Jordan in Lanterns, the DCU's Green Lantern show that will air on HBO at an unspecified time in the future. The good news is that that rumor was true - Brolin did indeed receive the metaphorical summons from Oa. The bad news, though, is that he didn't accept it.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the actor passed on the project on September 10, claiming that Brolin got an offer for the role at the end of August 2024. What's not reported yet is why the offer didn't go through, though to be fair, there's not much to be known so far about the show itself.
What we do know is that the series will pair Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart to explore a cosmic investigation with a "a gritty True Detective vibe." Bringing that vibe to TV will be mystery master Damon Lindelof, creator of LOST, The Leftovers, and for DC fans' purposes, the Watchmen HBO series. And speaking of DC fans, Tom King will be aboard the project as a writer, bringing with him not just a long history of DC experience, but of mystery writing in the cases of The Human Target, Rorschach, and more.
And though we're big Green Lantern fans here at Popverse, that's unfortunately about all we can tell you about the series at the moment. For now, we can only wonder about who will eventually end up playing flight jockey Jordan, and maybe postulate on how the meta Cable/Wade dialogue would have gone down in Deadpool 4.
Not to brag or anything, but New York Comic Con on Thursday, October 17 is where you’ll get an extended sneak peek at episode 5 of HBO’s The Penguin before anyone else. Not to mention, Colin Farrel will be discussing all the limited series’ juicy details with the cast and crew live. Limited Thursday NYCC 2024 tickets are still on sale.
