To make KPop Demon Hunters 2 deal as quickly as possible, Netflix shelled out $15 million

When you have a hit like KPop Demon Hunters on your hands, you need to move quickly to take advantage of it. The complicated relationship between Sony Animation, which made the movie, and Netflix, which distributed it, threatened to keep a sequel from coming together, despite such high demand from fans. However, Netflix had a solution: a $15 million cash bonus.
KPop Demon Hunters dominated the Netflix charts over the summer and continues to reign over the music charts thanks to its remarkable soundtrack, but Sony hasn’t been able to take advantage of that success the same way Netflix has. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix paid Sony a cash bonus of $15 million to help hammer out a deal for the recently confirmed sequel.
This deal cuts the overall cost for Sony Animation to make KPop Demon Hunters from $40 million to $25 million, but it is really an olive branch that Netflix used to get the deal for a KPop Demon Hunter sequel hammered out quickly.
Is KPop Demon Hunters 2 coming out soon?
The sequel is set to come out in 2029, four years after the first movie became one of the biggest pop culture moments in recent years. There is already a deal in place for KPop Demon Hunters merchandise that is set to come out in January 2026. Speed is of the essence for both Sony and Netflix if they want to capitalize on the immense hype behind the KPop Demon Hunters brand.
KPop Demon Hunters 2 is due out in 2029, made possible by a $15 million payment from Netflix to Sony.
