Lord of the Rings' Elijah Wood says he "wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo as long as I’m alive"

Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will have Gandalf and Frodo, said Sir Ian McKellen, so can we expect Elijah Wood?

Hollywood isn't quite done with the Lord of the Rings quite yet, and neither is Frodo Baggins actor, Elijah Wood. Even as Hollywood moves to expand upon the mythology laid down by J.R.R Tolkien, some members of the original live-action Lord of the Rings cast aren't looking to go anywhere. This is the case with Frodo Baggins himself, Elijah Wood.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Wood revealed that he would love to keep playing Frodo as long as he physically can. “I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo as long as I’m alive and able," Wood said.

“It hasn’t been officially announced, but at a convention last August, Ian [McKellen] sort of let the cat out of the bag. So there is a good chance. I’m not able to officially say anything until it’s announced, but I will say I’m thrilled with the prospect of another film. It’s always a little nerve-racking when people talk about new movies for a world like Middle-earth. Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun, thrilling. There is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together.”

The next Lord of the Rings movie is called The Hunt for Gollum, and it centers on, you guessed it, the search for Gollum that “falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines of Moria," said screenwriter Philippa Boyens to Variety. For context, both of those events take place in The Fellowship of the Ring.

Sir Ian McKellen said that Gandalf and Frodo will be in The Hunt for Gollum (via Variety), but we don't know if that means that Elijah Wood would be turning to the role. Clearly, Wood has a desire to keep playing Frodo, so it's your move, Warner Bros.

Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is expected to hit theaters in 2027.
