It was one of the most iconic moments of the original movie, but director Gerard Johnstone is downplaying the corridor dance from 2022 horror movie M3GAN — and cautioning fans not to expect a reprise in this summer’s M3GAN 2.0.
“The dance was just one of those things,” Johnstone told Empire magazine about the scene that took the world by storm in the 2022 original, where the killer robot distracts David (Ronny Chieng) before slaughtering him. (We put the video of the dance down below, because why wouldn’t we?). “I gotta get this character from A to B, and it just seemed boring to have her pick up a blade.”
The dance went viral, making the movie into a mainstream hit — but that doesn’t mean that audiences should go into June’s M3GAN 2.0 looking for more of the same.
“I hate it when movies do that,” Johnstone said when asked if the sequel would go back to the same beats as the first movie. Instead, he’s promising that there’s going to be new things for fans to enjoy — including a shift into a more action movie context than the first feature.
“M3GAN’s the kind of character that doesn’t like labels, and doesn’t want to be defined by one genre,” he told Empire. “So it just felt fitting to segue into this. I hope people dig it, and they’re not bummed out that she doesn’t start randomly dancing down the corridor. We haven’t shoehorned in another sort of guillotine somewhere for her to grab.”
Well, you have to save something for the third movie, right…?
M3GAN 2.0 will be released June 27.
