Since 2008’s Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become known for its iconic villains as much as its heroes - and with threats like Galactus, Thanos, and Loki, fans have some pretty cosmic threats to choose from when picking their favorite. But which MCU villain is the strongest? The question intrigued us, so we decided to do what we do best and make a nerdy ranking. Bring on the bad guys!

How we ranked the strongest MCU villains

Determining the strongest MCU villain is tricky, because power levels can be inconsistent. To determine the strongest MCU villain, we looked at each villain at the peak of their powers, then compared them to one another. This means we’re judging Thanos based on when he wore the Infinity Gauntlet and Wanda based on when she had the Darkhold.

We also had to be picky about the villains we chose for this ranking. For example, Spider-Man: Brand New Day had Scorpion, Jean Grey, Tombstone, Tarantula (for a scene), and Damage Control. If we were to use EVERY MCU bad guy, this list would go into the triple digits. In order to make this reader friendly, we’re only using the main villain from each MCU project.

41 – Alexander Pierce

• As seen in: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

A government official who was secretly an agent of Hydra. His position allowed him to do a lot of damage, but as a regular human without powers or special equipment, he can’t compete with the raw power many of the other villains on this list had. Even though he’s played by the iconic Robert Redford, Alexander Pierce holds the distinction of being the least powerful main villain in an MCU movie.

40 - Karli Morgenthau

• As seen in: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Karli is the leader of a terrorist organization known as the Flag Smashers. Karli took the Super Soldier Formula, which gave her the same abilities as Captain America and Bucky Barnes. However, she lacked their military training, so her enhanced abilities only took her so far. Karli did a little bit of damage before being killed by Sharon Carter.

39 -  Obadiah Stane / Iron Monger

• As seen in: Iron Man

Obadiah Stane was one of Tony Stark’s business associates, who secretly betrayed him for corporate control. He developed his own version of the Iron Man armor and became Iron Monger. He gave Iron Man a run for his money, but he didn’t have the same proficiency with his suit that Stark did. A good weapon is only powerful if you know how to use it properly.

38 – Whiplash

• As seen in: Iron Man 2

Whiplash was an agent of Hammer Industries who has a suit powered by an Arc Reactor, similar to the source of Iron Man’s power. He had electric whips, and he gave Iron Man a hard time for a short time, before ultimately meeting his end at his own hands, humiliated by his defeat. Aside from that, there isn’t much to say about Whiplash.

37 – Vulture

• As seen in: Spider-Man: Homecoming

Adrian Toomes built his flying Vulture suit out of scraps and alien tech, augmented by his team of goons (both thieves and technical geniuses). He was a more formidable foe than his comic book counterpart, but to be fair, that guy is like 90; The movie Vulture was a master tactician, a man who wasn't held back by a regular moral code and, since he was played by Michael Keaton, he was damn intimidating (just watch the car scene with him and Peter). You want to get nuts? Come on, let’s get nuts!

36 – Titania

• As seen in: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

A supervillain with enough raw physical strength to go toe-to-toe with She-Hulk. She’s also an influencer and she isn’t above exploiting the justice system to annoy her enemies. She could be lower on this list, but influencers carry a lot of weight in our modern era, and her creative use of the legal system gave She-Hulk a problem she couldn’t punch her way out of. Let’s see Whiplash do that.

35 – Taskmaster

• As seen in: Black Widow and Thunderbolts*

A Red Room assassin who has a chip in her brain that allows her to mimic the fighting techniques of any combatant. That means she’s pretty powerful, right? You would think, but Black Widow and White Widow had little trouble beating her, and she was easily killed by Ghost in Thunderbolts*. She had lots of potential but was never much of a threat.

34 – Mysterio

• As seen in: Spider-Man: Far From Home

Quentin Beck was a master illusionist who had a pack of attack drones. His holographic technology was realistic, making it hard for Spider-Man to know what was real and what wasn’t. Beyond that, he was a great conman, tricking Spider-Man and even Nick Fury into believing he was a hero from another dimension. Even in death he proved to be a big threat, exposing Spider-Man’s identity to the world in a post-mortem video message. The repercussions of that move can still be felt today.

33 - Red Skull

• As seen in: Captain America: The First Avenger, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame

Red Skull is a Nazi official and a Hydra agent who took a version of Captain America’s Super Soldier Serum. He tried to use the Tesseract to power himself up, but instead it doomed him to a life as the Stonekeeper, a wraith doomed to spend eternity guarding the Soul Stone. He presumably has cosmic powers as the Stonekeeper, but it's never revealed whether he can use them for battle.

32 -  Ghost

• As seen in: Ant-Man and the Wasp and Thunderbolts*

Ghost is the daughter of two scientists who gained the ability to become intangible after her parents were killed during an experiment gone wrong. Ghost’s powers mean that she can phase through solid matter, and regular attacks will phase through her. Initially she didn’t have complete control over her powers, but Hank Pym helped her get it under control. She’s formidable in battle, but not invincible.

31 – Abomination

• As seen in: The Incredible Hulk and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

A former special-ops commander who was transformed by Gamma radiation. Oh, and he’s also got Captain America’s Super Soldier Serum in his blood, to boot, which would presumably make him stronger than the average Hulk. His strength, size, and durability put him on par with the Hulk, making him a pretty big threat.

30 -  Samuel Sterns/The Leader

• As seen in: The Incredible Hulk and Captain America: Brave New World

A cellular biologist whose brain was infected by Gamma radiation, making him a master tactician. Unlike others on the list, his power is purely brain power and unable to directly affect others; it relies on manipulation and strategy, and for others to react as he has planned. That said, he almost started a war between the United States and Japan, and he manipulated the President of the United States into becoming Red Hulk. That’s pretty powerful, and he did most of it from a jail cell.

29 - Yon-Rogg

• As seen in: Captain Marvel

A Kree soldier who was a master combatant. He had gauntlets which could shoot Photon blasts. Captain Marvel was able to defeat him in one blast, but to be fair, she is one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe.

28 -  Najma

• As seen in: Ms. Marvel

The leader of the Clandestines from the Noor Dimension. She and her family were exiled to Earth. Najma had enhanced strength and durability, and she could also fire energy blasts and open dimensional rifts when she had a pair of powerful Bangles. Her attempts to return to her home dimension almost destroyed Earth, and she ultimately sacrificed herself to make things right.

27 - Arthur Harrow

• As seen in: Moon Knight

A former Avatar of Khonshu who went a little nuts and started a cult to bestow judgment on the world. Using the Staff of Ammit, Harrow determines who is good or bad, then executes them depending on the verdict. The Staff also allowed him to drain the life force from his victims. Thankfully Moon Knight was able to best him.

26 – Yellowjacket

• As seen in: Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (as M.O.D.O.K.)

If you can imagine Ant-Man’s growing and shrinking powers fused with Iron Man’s armor, then you have a pretty good idea of who Yellowjacket is. The Pym Particles can be dangerous in the wrong hands, especially if you know how to use them. However, they’re also hard to control, as Yellowjacket learned when he shrank down to the Quantum Realm. 

25 - Aldrich Killian

• As seen in: Iron Man 3

Aldrich Killian was a scientist and CEO who injected himself with the Extremis serum. The concoction gave him heat generation, fire breath, strength, stamina, and enhanced healing. He survived being blown up multiple times and nearly killed Iron Man and Pepper Potts.

24 - Agatha Harkness

• As seen in: WandaVision and Agatha All Along

A centuries-old witch who practices dark magic. While not as powerful as Wanda Maximoff, Agatha has some deadly tricks up her sleeve. During Wanda’s enslavement of Westview, Agatha was able to perform mental manipulation, teleportation, power absorption, and more. Oh, and she killed Billy and Tommy’s dog, which was a pretty evil thing to do.

23 – Malekith

• As seen in: Thor: The Dark World

Malekith is a Dark Elf who has been at war with Asgard for centuries. Malekith was empowered by the Aether, which gave him the ability to heal severed limbs, turn matter into dark matter, project energy, tinker with the fabric of reality, and have enough strength to battle Thor. Malekith was a powerful villain on paper, but he’s often overlooked because he didn’t have the same charisma as the MCU’s other villains, and he had the misfortune of being in Thor: The Dark World, which is considered one of the weakest MCU movies.

22 – Wilson Fisk/Kingpin

• As seen in: Daredevil, Hawkeye, Echo, and Daredevil: Born Again

I feel guilty about putting Kingpin this low because Vincent D’Onofrio gives one of the best villain performances in the MCU. However, a phenomenal actor who sends chills down your spine is not the same thing as being able to go toe-to-toe with the Avengers. Wilson Fisk has great resources, he takes control of every room he’s in, he’s controlled New York City, and he’s made Daredevil’s life a living hell. However, he wouldn’t last more than a few seconds against Thor.

21 - Baron Zemo

• As seen in: Captain America: Civil War and The Falcon and Winter Soldier

A Sokovian nobleman who became a supervillain after his family was killed during a battle between the Avengers and Ultron. Zemo is the highest-ranking non-superpowered villain on this list, and that’s because of what he accomplished. He bombed the United Nations, killing King T’Chaka of Wakanda. He manipulated the Avengers into breaking up, pitting Iron Man and Captain America against one another. He might not have the power of someone like Thanos, but he was able to manipulate the most powerful heroes into fighting one another, creating conflicts that took years to resolve.

20 – Killmonger

• As seen in: Black Panther

Killmonger is another villain I feel guilty about not placing higher because Michael B. Jordan gave one of the best performances the MCU has ever seen. Even without his Vibranium suit and the herbs that granted him enhanced speed and strength, Killmonger is one of the best fighters in the entire franchise. He walked into Wakanda and became king of the entire country within hours! That’s power. Plus, that waterfall battle against T’Challa is one of the best fight scenes that’s ever been in a comic book movie.

19 -  Ultron

• As seen in: Avengers: Age of Ultron

Ultron is an android with a Vibranium body. He’s able to connect to the internet and use it to get onto secure military servers. He can also control an army of drone bodies that share his AI consciousness. He lifted an entire city into the air (thanks to some stolen tech) and came pretty close to achieving human extinction.

18 – Namor

• As seen in: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Namor is an undersea monarch with the powers of flight, super-strength, and durability. He has a supply of Vibranium, which comes in handy for making weapons and armor for his army. He nearly destroyed Wakanda, which is no easy feat. He would have a higher spot on this list if it weren’t for his weakness to extreme heat.

17 - Gorr the God Butcher

• As seen in: Thor: Love and Thunder

Powered by the Necrosword, Gorr traveled across the cosmos killing gods. On his own, he didn’t have much strength, but with the sword he was able to go toe-to-toe with some of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe and even hold his own against Thor’s Stormbreaker. Gorr would be higher on this list, but the sword that gave him his powers was also slowly killing him.

16 - Xu Wenwu

• As seen in: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

A martial arts master who was powered by a mythical set of bands known as the Ten Rings. While wielding the Rings, Xu had enhanced strength, speed, and durability. The Ten Rings also slowed his aging, gave him the power to project energy blasts, and create mini-force fields. He was ultimately killed by the Dweller-in-Darkness, ending his criminal reign of terror.

15 - Ronan the Accuser

• As seen in: Guardians of the Galaxy

Ronan was a Kree warlord who was a pretty heavy bruiser before getting his hands on the Power Stone. Once he added the fabled Infinity Stone to his hammer, he was able to take on the entire Nova Corps and nearly take out the entire planet Xandar. He’s one of the bigger threats in this ranking, but without the Power Stone, he wouldn’t be nearly as high on this list.

14 – The High Evolutionary

• As seen in: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

A geneticist who experimented on different species. The High Evolutionary would create new races and then wipe them out without blinking an eye. He also experimented on himself, changing his genes to give him enhanced strength and telekinesis. He was able to use his powers to stop Adam Warlock dead in his tracks. Due to the amount of civilizations he’s created and wiped out, he has one of the highest body counts in the MCU.

13 - Ikaris

• As seen in: The Eternals

Ikaris is an Eternal with the power of flight. He could shoot energy beams that can cut through nearly anything and has enough strength and durability to take on the entire Eternals team (which he did). Think of him as an evil version of DC’s Superman, and that should give you an idea of his power level.

12 - Dar-Benn

• As seen in: The Marvels

A Kree warrior who wielded Quantum Bands and Ronan’s Universal Weapon. She opened jump points, drained planetary energy, and nearly collapsed realities. She died by overloading the bands, but the damage she did was enough to nearly wipe out the entire galaxy.

11 – Ego

• As seen in: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

A living planet and a Celestial who used a process known as expansion to plant his seeds in other worlds, which would’ve overwritten each planet into a version of himself. Ego was able to grow bodies for himself and manipulate cosmic energy to create matter. He could also influence someone mentally by touching their forehead.

10 – Hela

• As seen in: Thor: Ragnarok

Odin’s firstborn child. Hela was able to crush Thor’s hammer Mjolnir with one hand, slaughter Asgard’s army, and overpower Thor and Hulk. She was able to raise the dead and conjure an endless supply of swords. It isn’t hard to see why Odin banished her.

9 - Jean Grey

• As seen in: Spider-Man: Brand New Day

A teenage mutant with the power to possess other people’s bodies. She was able to use this power to control super-powered individuals like Hulk and Scorpion. Spider-Man was resistant to her power, which means there must be limits to who she can possess, but the extent of this limit is undefined. Jean received a power boost at the end of the film, which allowed her to physically freeze most of New York City’s citizens. The MCU version of the character is still learning her powers, but from what we’ve seen so far, she’ll likely be just as powerful as her comic book counterpart - who is one of the most powerful beings in existence.

8 – Dormammu

• As seen in: Doctor Strange

An inter-dimensional entity that rules the Dark Dimension. Dormammu has consumed countless worlds and dimensions, which has caused his power to grow. Within the Dark Dimension he is unstoppable, and there is no telling the amount of damage he could do if he ever got to our realm. Doctor Strange could not overpower him and had to trap him in a time loop until he got bored.

7 - Wanda Maximoff

• As seen in: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

A sorceress who was once part of the Avengers. After the death of Vision, Wanda used her powers to rewrite reality and enslave an entire town. She grew more powerful after obtaining a spell book known as the Darkhold. Using dark magic, Scarlet Witch was able to possess her counterpart from another dimension and nearly steal the powers and lifeforce from America Chavez.

6 - The Void

• As seen in: Thunderbolts*

The Void is the dark split personality of the superpowered individual known as Sentry. The dark entity expands living darkness that swallows people, placing them into pocket dimensions that replay their most traumatic memories. The Void nearly consumed the New Avengers, but their strong wills, and Sentry’s determination, allowed them to overcome the villain. The Void is dormant for now, but his power is theoretically limitless if unchecked.

5 - Cassandra Nova

• As seen in: Deadpool & Wolverine

An Omega-level telepath/telekinetic and the twin sister of Charles Xavier. She’s a powerful psychic who can enter your mind, manipulate your memories, and activate your pain receptors. Her telekinetic powers are so strong that she was able to rip the Human Torch’s skin off his body, killing the hero instantly. Cassandra could also teleport and become intangible.

4 – Galactus

• As seen in: Fantastic Four: First Steps

A planet-devourer who possesses the Power Cosmic. This power gives him the ability to manipulate matter and use telekinesis. Galactus was also able to use the Power Cosmic to induce Sue Storm’s labor, which means he could manipulate bodily functions of other biological beings. He can bestow portions of his powers to others, such as his herald, the Silver Surfer. However, this power comes at a great cost, condemning Galactus to an eternal hunger that can never be satisfied. As a result, Galactus is doomed to spend eternity looking for planets to keep his hunger at bay.

3  - Thanos

• As seen in: Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame

Thanos is a warlord from Titan who wiped out fifty percent of all the lifeforms in the universe for five years before the Avengers restored them. Thanos accomplished this by obtaining all the Infinity Stones, which allowed him to control space, the mind, reality, power, time, and the soul. Thanos’s Infinity Gauntlet made him virtually invincible, and the only reason the Avengers were able to defeat him was because Thanos destroyed the Infinity Stones himself. A version of Thanos from a branched timeline nearly destroyed the Avengers, but Iron Man was able to wipe him from existence before he was able to use the Infinity Gauntlet.

2 – Kang

• As seen in: Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

This one is a bit complicated because there are multiple Kangs in the MCU. For the purpose of this ranking, we’re going to think of all of these Kangs as a collective entity, even though not all Kangs are created equal. We’re putting Kang above Thanos because some versions of him, such as He Who Remains, live in a dimension outside of normal time and space, where the Infinity Stones have no power. He Who Remains controlled the Time Variance Authority, essentially giving him control over all reality, and the timeline itself.

The other versions of Kang have advanced technology from the future and have the resources to bring the cosmos to its knees. However, despite Kang’s strength, he wasn’t strong enough to withstand his actor’s controversies, resulting in the villain quietly being written out of the MCU. 

1 – Loki

• As seen in: Thor, The Avengers, Loki, and numerous other projects.

Loki takes the number one spot on this ranking because he took control over the entire multiverse at the end of Loki season two. The former Asgardian prankster destroyed the Temporal Loom and then used his magic to repair and bind the multiverse. Loki literally has the various branching timelines in his hands, making him the keeper of all reality. He’s more powerful than He Who Remains, he’s more powerful than Thanos at his peak, and he’s easily more powerful than anyone on this list.

The Loki situation is a bit complicated since the original version is dead, and the character currently in MCU movies is a variant from a branched timeline. Like Kang, we’re going to treat all the versions of the character as a collective entity. The most powerful version of Loki was also a heroic character rather than a villain, making his placement on this ranking a bit tricky. However, Loki has always played by his own rules, and given his history, it’s more than fair to put him on a villain ranking.

If we were just going by the versions of Loki we saw in the Thor movies, he would have a much lower spot. His magic, illusions, and his brief empowerment from the Space Stone made him a formidable threat, but that was nothing compared to who he became at the end of Loki season two.

Honorable mention - Doctor Doom

We can’t ignore the elephant in the room: The MCU has a new big bad, and if he’s anything like his comic book counterpart, he has the potential to be one of the most powerful people on this list. Doctor Doom has always been one of the biggest movers and shakers in the Marvel Universe, and with Downey behind the iron mask, there’s no telling what heights his MCU counterpart will reach. In the comics, Doctor Doom has destroyed and rebuilt the entire universe, although this was a temporary powerup. Is it possible that we’ll see Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom become as powerful? We'll know more when Avengers: Doomsday is released December 18, 2026. 

Who is the most powerful MCU villain?

Loki is the most powerful MCU villain, if we’re going by the version of the character seen at the end of Loki season two. The television series ends with Loki outside of time and space, taking control of the multiverse, using his magic to weave and repair the shattered timelines. Loki has essentially become the most powerful being in the universe.

Who is the most evil villain in the MCU?

The High Evolutionary is the baddest villain in the MCU. It’s hard to come up with an answer, because bad is subjective, and there is no set metric. For example, Thanos slaughtered half of the universe, but he felt kind of bad about some of it, which is why I believe the High Evolutionary is more evil. The High Evolutionary tortured animals, and mocked Rocket Raccoon’s grief after murdering his friends. He also destroyed an entire planet of lifeforms he created without a second thought. Thanos had a higher body count by far, but the High Evolutionary took special delight in the suffering of others.
