When Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning was first announced, the title of the movie was Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part Two… which only made sense, as it was announced as the second half of the story that started with what reached theaters as Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. With the new title’s arrival, however, came many people’s suspicions that a message was being sent about Tom Cruise’s intentions for the franchise. So: is The Final Reckoning intended to signify that this is the last Mission: Impossible movie?
According to writer/director Christopher McQuarrie, the title change has a lot more to do with the box office performance of the last movie than anything else. “After the first film came out, we all evaluated,” McQuarrie told Empire magazine. “Nothing changed about quote-unquote ‘Part Two’, but we understood that that title could potentially lead to someone saying, ‘I didn’t see the other movie.’”
Sure, but is it the last movie in the series? McQuarrie isn’t giving that up easily. “It is, I hope, the satisfying conclusion to a 30-year story arc,” he said when asked about the topic, adding, “I’m pretty confident that people are going to feel that the title was appropriate.”
Tom Cruise, meanwhile, knows how to turn the question back into a plug for the product. “You gotta see the movie,” he told Empire when the subject came up. “It’s a hard thing for me to discuss at the moment, because it really is something that you have to experience.”
See? That’s how a movie star answers these kinds of questions. Take note, everyone else.
