One of the big film stories of 2025 isn’t what has come out but what hasn’t.

Mortal Kombat II was pushed back to May 2026 because the studio believes it has the potential to be a big summer blockbuster - in fact, New Line Cinema has so much faith in the Mortal Kombat franchise that they have hired Jeremy Slater to start writing Mortal Kombat III.

The announcement came at the end of the Mortal Kombat II New York Comic Con 2025 panel. Just before they showed a world premiere scene from the movie, which featured a fight between Johnny Cage and Baraka, Jeremy Slater told the packed crowd the good news. “Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this movie. They are so excited," he said. "They are so convinced that there is a giant fanbase waiting for it that they have already hired me to start writing the next instalment of the Mortal Kombat franchise.”

That news is the latest example of the massive hype around Mortal Kombat II, which has a packed cast and has impressed the studio so much that they’ve moved it to a new release date, where it can kick off the summer blockbuster season. And now we find out that they’re already looking to expand the franchise into Mortal Kombat III.
