For our latest trick, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock might get back together again for Practical Magic 2

How many unfortunate curses can two sisters have to deal with?

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman re-teaming with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman after almost 30 years to tell the next chapter in their fantasy romance story? It really must be (Practical) Magic.

Deadline reports that Kidman and Bullock are in talks to reprise their roles as the Owens sisters (Gillian and Sally, respectively) in Practical Magic 2, a sequel to their 1998 fantasy that also featured Stockard Channing, Aidan Quinn, and Dianne Wiest. The two would also produce the movie alongside Denise Di Novi, who produced the original, with Goldsman, who co-wrote the first, returning to provide the screenplay.

For those who don’t remember the original movie, clearly you’re not a connoisseur of the late ‘90s witch movie trend (Remember The Craft? The Crucible?). The short version: the Owens are two sisters descended from a line of witches, who were raised to embrace their heritage — which turns out to be a good thing, when they have to use it to defend themselves against an abusive (and dead) ex-boyfriend. Oh, and there’s also a curse that kills men who fall in love with the sisters to deal with. It was the ‘90s.

No plot details are available for the new movie, but it’s worth noting that the novel it was based on — also titled Practical Magic, written by Alice Hoffman and published in 1995 — has had two prequels and one sequel published in the last few years: 2017’s The Rules of Magic, 2020’s Magic Lessons, both set before the original, and 2021’s The Book of Magic. Notably, producer Di Novi tried setting up a TV series for streaming service Max based on The Rules of Magic, but it didn’t make it to the screen; that was, perhaps surprisingly, the second attempt to bring the story to the small screen; a 2004 project called Sudbury that would have starred Jeri Ryan, Kim Delaney, and Kat Dennings never made it past the pilot stage.

Practical Magic 2 is, for now, just a gleam in producers’ eyes until deals are signed. But stranger things have happened… especially when it’s got anything to do with the magic realm.
