Spaceballs 2 will finally bring back a 1980s acting legend... maybe
It has been a long time since we saw Rick Moranis on screen, but Spaceballs 2 might be the perfect role for him to return with

One of the most iconic actors of the 1980s was Rick Moranis, who stood out for his roles in Ghostbusters, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, and, of course, Spaceballs. However, he left acting behind in the 90s to take care of his family and has been retired-ish since then. That could change for Spaceballs 2, according to co-writer and actor Josh Gad.
It is one of the biggest questions facing Spaceballs 2: Will Rick Moranis return as the villainous Dark Helmet? While speaking to reporters, Josh Gad seemed to hint that it could happen.
“Well, I’m not going to comment on whether or not Rick Moranis is returning,” Josh Gad said in an interview. “But, hypothetically, if he were to return, I would say it’s because Rick would have felt like this was a project worthy of his return. So watch this space.”
Fans will note that this is not a confirmation or a denial that Rick Moranis, who has appeared sporadically in film and TV since 1997 as he focused on raising his sons, will be back in Spaceballs 2, which gives Gad plenty of wiggle room if, for whatever reason, Moranis isn’t in the movie. However, we have to think that if there weren’t any plans for Rick Moranis to reprise his role as Dark Helmet.
Spaceballs 2 is set to return to cinemas in 2027. While many of the original cast, like Bill Pullman and Mel Brooks, are returning for the journey, we’re still waiting for official confirmation that Rick Moranis will be back.
