Since Christopher Nolan showed us all what a grounded comic book movie could look like, directors all around the world have been trying to repeat the success of The Dark Knight trilogy. Thankfully, the director of the upcoming Street Fighter movie knows that isn’t what the people want from the series. Instead, he focused on recreating the sense of fun the fighting game franchise is known for.

On paper, it is obvious. After all, this is a world with a Chinese woman with machine gun kicks who regularly fights an Indian man with extending arms, so making a Street Fighter movie grounded in reality probably wasn’t everyone’s first thought. However, Kitao Sakurai, the director and co-writer of the movie, wants fans to know that he isn’t trying to make a new Dark Knight trilogy.

“There’s been a long run of IP movies that take on a very serious and intense approach – [Christopher Nolan’s] Dark Knight trilogy kicked things off and that trend took hold and became dominant,” Sakurai said in a recent interview with Empire Magazine. “But when I think about Street Fighter the game, there’s something fun and crazy about it. The spirit of the game is this mix of people from around the world, with different characters clashing in a way that isn’t super dark. So I always kept in mind: this world needs to be fun.”

Despite David Dastmalchian diving into the mindset of a cult leader to play M. Bison, it sounds like the new Street Fighter movie is going to focus on some of the more silly, camp elements from the games and the original movie – and that fills us with such joy.
