DC Studios head James Gunn is "pre-writing" his next movie now that Superman is almost finished (and almost in theaters)

Gunn also offered updates on the status of Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and how ready the Superman trailer is

Ahead of the release of Superman this summer, the new DCU is continuing to grow. On social media this weekend, Superman writer/director James Gunn revealed that he’s already at work on his next project even as Superman and Peacemaker get locked down — and it’s something that no-one has heard of just yet.

Responding to fan questions on Threads, Gunn said that he was “pre-writing” and “tooling around” on his next film, because he’s “deep in finishing Superman and Peacemaker.” Asked if the new project was something already announced or brand new, he simply responded, “New.”

That it’s not been previously announced doesn’t mean it’s not part of DC’s Gods and Monsters launch slate; that line-up has already had a Clayface movie added to it, as well as The Teen Titans and maybe Sgt. Rock depending on circumstances, meaning that it’s somewhat in flux to a degree.

However, it also doesn’t mean that we should be expecting an announcement any time soon; Superman was reportedly something Gunn had been thinking about for years before it was officially announced back in 2022; he’d apparently been offered the project back in 2018. (There’s a non-zero chance it would be a second Superman movie, or at least something connected to it.)

During the same Q&A session, Gunn said that Superman is more than 90% finished, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has finished shooting, and the full Superman trailer is “ready.” I don’t want to seem impatient, but if that last part is true, can we see it sometime soon, please? The movie itself is less than two months away by this point…!

Superman will be in theaters July 11. Maybe by then, we might have a better idea what James Gunn is going to be working on next.
