At last, we know the next entry into what DC Studios head James Gunn is calling 'the Superman Saga,' and appropriately, it's all about the future. On Septmeber 3, the director/writer of this summer's Superman took to social media to announce Man of Tomorrow, a new Superman-starring film set for release in 2027. And perhaps even more interesting, Gunn teased that the film will see villain Lex Luthor return in a major role.
Gunn's post on X/Twitter was pretty devoid of detail, revealing only the film's title, release date, and an image of Superman and Lex Luthor together (drawn by none other than DC COmics' president/publisher/chief creative officer Jim Lee and longtime colorist Alex Sinclair!). In the pic, the Man of Steel is giving off a kind, if not chummy vibe holding a screwdriver almost the same way the Tenth Doctor would sport his sonic variant. The included image of Luthor, however, is distinctly less friendly - this Lex is fully equipped with his battle armor, which Gunn teased earlier this year in an episode of the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast. Could this mean that the film will see Luthor donning the suit in an effort to strike down Superman? Or even weirder: in an effort to... help him? Check out the image below:

Any answer we'd posit to those questions right now would be nothing more than speculation, but what we can tell you for sure after this announcement is the upcoming Superman sequel's release date. Man of Tomorrow, announced the head of the DCU, will be in theaters July 9, 2027. That's just about a year after the Milly Alcock-starring Supergirl flies into theaters June 26, 2026.
One last note here - Man of Tomorrow isn't just a newly announced film, but it's also an addition to the slate of Gunn's 'Gods & Monsters' chapter of the DCU, announced all the way back in 2024. Does its inclusion signal a shift in the studios plans for the cinematic universe, perhaps informed by the box office success of David Corenswet's first adventure as Superman? Only the future (and all its other Tomorrows) can tell.
Man of Tomorrow is set for release July 9, 2027.
