Is Billie Piper the new Doctor Who? If not, who is? We'll know in "a week, two weeks," promises showrunner Russell T. Davies
It's been over a year since Ncuti Gatwa's regeneration, but we still don't know who Doctor Who's Sixteenth Doctor will be. Thankfully, Davies says the wait should be over soon

There's no such thing as anticipation if you've got a TARDIS. You and your Time Lord companion can just hop in, take your machine to any point in history, and know what you want to know. If you're one of us time-and-space-bound Doctor Who fans, however, there's no way knowing the answer to the question on every Whovian's mind: Who is the next Doctor?
Not yet, anyway. But the way Russell T. Davies tells it, that's going to change very soon.
In case you're not aware, the question of who will succeed Ncuti Gatwa's 15th Doctor technically already might have an answer, since the last time we saw him, he was regenerating into the very familiar face of Billie Piper. However, no one involved in the making of that episode will unequivocally declare if the former Rose Tyler is the next face of the world's most famous Time Lord, leaving many fans (including Popverse's Graeme McMillan) to speculate that Piper is, somehow, a different character altogether.
So when long-time Doctor Who writer Davies sat down to promote his new show Tip Toe on BBC Radio 2, you can understand why he got the question of, essentially, 'when will we know what's going on with Doctor Who?'
"You will get an announcement," Davies answered (as reported by Radio Times), "There is a press release lumbering through the BBC which, as you know, is like the Jurassic period and 57 people have to sign off on every single word."
It's about as non-answery as answers come, but what's worth pointing out is that Davies doesn't end there. Not only does the Tip Toe writer have insider knowledge about that particular press release, he was also willing to share a rough estimate as to when all those words will be signed off upon.
"I promise you in about a week, two weeks, there will be some sort of press release," said Davies, "And yet I can hear the gears slowing down even as I say that. You know this place!"
We sympathize Russell, but don't for a second think that we didn't automatically add two weeks to the publication date of this statement (June 15, for the math haters). And don't also think that, if that date goes by with still no official word, we won't start considering building a TARDIS for ourselves.
The most recent episodes of Doctor Who are streaming on Disney+ now. The seasons featuring the Ninth through Thirteenth Doctors will be added to AMC+ June 11.
