The Batman Part II co-writer Mattson Tomlin posted a cryptic message one hour before Matt Reeves posted the completed script, and we're confused

What does an upside down smiley face mean in regards to The Batman Part II, Mattson? WHAT DOES IT MEAN??

Look, riddles are fine and dandy when we're seated in a theater for a Batman movie. But while we're eagerly awaiting news of one?? C'mon folks, that's a little cruel. I'm specifically talking about Mattson Tomlin, the Terminator Zero creator who co-wrote The Batman Part II script along with director Matt Reeves. As you may have heard, Reeves posted a photo of himself alongside both Tomlin AND a completed Batman Part II script on June 27. But what we're wondering about is why, only an hour before, Tomlin prepped us for what seemed like bad news.

OK, let's back up - In case you haven't seen it already, here's an image of the tweet Reeves posted at about 2:30 PM EST on June 27.

This image was retweeted by Tomlin's account almost instantaneously. And if you happened to follow the post as it appeared on the future Mega Man and BRZRKR scribe's Twitter account, you probably couldn't help but notice the post he sent out at 1:30, just an hour before:

Please understand, we aren't trying to clickbait you - we know that the amount of information we can extract from this image is exactly 0%. Nobody on the Popverse team is going to pretend to consider whether this is a Joker tease, or some commentary about the DCU, or anything like that. We're just here to point out that, exactly one hour before an objectively huge win for your career, it's very odd to Tweet something that has generally been accepted as meaning "things are bad right now."

Like, what the hell??

That said, we're not going to pretend that it doesn't have our wheels a'turnin' either, even if they have no direction to spin in. That we don't know what this means (and maybe we never will) honestly drives us crazy, since we're in the business of reading between the lines when it comes to movies. I suppose we may just have to wait until the Robert Pattinson-starring Batman sequel arrives in theaters to get our answers.

Speaking of, The Batman Part II is set to arrive in theaters October 1, 2027. 🙃
