Emily Blunt was not impressed when the real-life inspiration behind her Devil Wears Prada character first revealed herself

Emily Blunt’s breakout role in The Devil Wears Prada helped launch her highly successful Hollywood career, but it wouldn’t have happened without the woman who inspired the character of Emily Charlton in the original book. Now, the woman Lauren Weisberger based the antagonistic Emily Charlton shares the time she introduced herself to Emily Blunt… who wasn’t that bothered, really.
More than 20 years after Lauren Weisberger’s The Devil Wears Prada was published, Leslie Fremar has come forward as the woman who was the basis for Emily Charlton on a recent episode of Vogue’s The Run-Through podcast, which is a bold move because the book (and subsequent film) does not paint her in a positive light. However, it is the story Fremar shares about meeting Emily Blunt, who plays Emily Charlton in The Devil Wears Prada film, that caught our attention.
“I said to her, I was like, ‘I just need to let you know, I’m Emily,’” Fremar said of the encounter. However, it didn’t seem to faze the actress. “She was not that interested, to be honest. I thought I was gonna get this, like, huge reaction. Like, no. It was like, ‘Oh. OK.’”
Clearly, Emily Blunt had other things on her mind at the time, though we love the idea of her just being confused and thinking, “But… I’m Emily.” Either way, the reveal didn’t get the reaction that Fremar was hoping for.
The reveal of who was the inspiration behind Emily Blunt’s character in The Devil Wears Prada has fortuitous timing, as The Devil Wears Prada 2 is in theaters now.
