Kids and animals would run away from Andre the Giant, but the actor never let it get him down according to his Princess Bride co-star Cary Elwes

The Princess Bride’s Cary Elwes says Andre the Giant was the sweetest and most generous man he’s ever met

It’s hard to imagine The Princess Bride without Andre the Giant. Andre’s portrayal of Fezzik the giant was one of the most memorable parts of the film. However, the real memories happened when the cameras weren’t filming.

“He was lovely. He was a gentle giant. A very sweet human being,” Westley actor Cary Elwes says during a panel at Tampa Bay Comic Convention. “He was friendly with everyone. Of course, everyone wanted their picture with him. He said kids and dogs either rushed towards him or screamed and ran away. And so, he had to deal with that throughout his life. People either gravitating towards him or being fearful of him.”

“He was just the sweetest human being. And I learned about being in the moment and being grateful. He knew he didn’t have long to live, and this was a man who truly lived in the moment. I admired him from the minute I met him. He never let anyone buy him a meal or a drink, so he was generous as well. I tried paying for the first meal we had together, and he slammed his hand down on mine, and bruised it rather badly [laughs]. I never did that again.”

Andre, whose real name was André René Roussimoff, passed away from heart failure in 1993. For us, he was an actor who brought us joy, but for Elwes, he was a friend that he’ll never forget. And he has the bruise on his hand to prove it.
