Thelma & Louise in heaven? Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon reveal the unexpected pitch for a sequel to the 1991 classic

People have tried to get Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis to do another Thelma & Louise film, even though their characters died in the first one

Thelma & Louise was one of the most celebrated films of 1991. The Ridley Scott crime drama about two women on the run after they accidentally kill a man was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Critics and audiences both gave the film high marks, and when it was released on home video it became the most rented movie of 1992.

When a film is this successful, the studio usually pushes for a sequel. However, this was difficult in Thelma & Louise's case, since the film ended with Thelma and Louise driving their car off a cliff to avoid being captured by the authorities.

Turns out, this hasn’t stopped people from pitching sequel ideas to Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, the actresses who played the feminist dynamic duo.

“We couldn’t really do a sequel to that movie,” Geena Davis says during a panel at GalaxyCon Raleigh 2025, before asking Sarandon, “Didn’t people ask you all the time if there would be a sequel for years? And I was like, 'What do you think happened. Did you see the movie?'”

“They came up with some sort of scenario at one point where we were up in heaven looking down on women being the victims of domestic abuse,” Susan Sarandon says. “And I remember saying to somebody, ‘But what would we be doing?’ And they said, ‘Collecting a big check.’ But there was no way to find something for us to do.”

Sarandon didn’t clarify if this was a fan pitch or a studio pitch. To be frank, it wouldn’t be the wildest pitch a studio executive has come up with.
