If you haven't seen Thunderbolts* ending, too bad: Marvel Studios is now marketing with the film's tail-end twist

MCU fans: if you were hoping to find out about the asterisk in Thunderbolts* by seeing the movie, you'd better stay away from commercials and billboards until you get to the theater

Major spoilers for Thunderbolts* (that Marvel is OK with you knowing, I guess) appear in this article.

Sorry, folks - I suppose you missed the cutoff for learning the Thunderbolts* biggest reveal via the actual movie. I'm speaking, of course, about the real meaning behind that asterisk in the title; as Popverse has revealed in our Thunderbolts* ending explained, the true meaning behind that little symbol is that, by the end of the film, the team of Bucky, Yelena, Sentry and the rest aren't known as the Thunderbolts at all, but The New Avengers. And now, Marvel Studios are allowing folks who haven't even seen the movie yet in on this secret, by changing the marketing for the film to reflect the New Avengers title.

Social media has been buzzing over the past few hours as MCU fans have been seeing Marvel Studios change out the titles in real time. One of the primary examples comes from X/Twitter user Jarrett Wieselman, who posted the image of a massive billboard for the film previous known as Thunderbolts* undergoing a transformation. Here is the image during the change:

And here's what we got after:

Along with changes in physical signage such as the above, Marvel Studios' official social media has also released graphics signifying the change.

The change on Marvel Studios part (which we have to imagine took some serious effort) raises some interesting questions, not the least of which being: why not just call it The New Avengers all along? Beyond that, we at Popverse are curious about how the film will be remembered in the sweeping history of the MCU - is the film now to be known as solely The New Avengers, or will the Thunderbolts title stick afterwards? After all, the MCU's next tentpole films are Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars - neither of which bear the "New" title.

Whatever the answer to the above questions might be, this slightly confusing marketing choice sends out another, very clear message to MCU viewers: you may have only opening weekend until the biggest spoilers start coming out.

I guess you should get those Doomsday tickets as fast as you can, friends.

Thunderbolts* (or is it The New Avengers?) is in theaters now.

Consider this a meta post-credits scene for Marvel fans - the four key articles you need to read next to continue the thrills:

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. As Popverse's Staff Writer, he criss-crosses the pop culture landscape bringing you the news and opinions about the big things (and the next big things). In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
