TMNT gets a new movie boss - the family man behind Fast & Furious and Sonic the Hedgehog

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles still have a lot of life left in their live-action movies, so Paramount is bringing in Neal H. Moritz to help get them back on track.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been one of the most enduring pop culture icons from the 1980s. From the original comics to the hit 1987 animated series to live-action box office hits to video games, TMNT has been omnipresent across media for generations. Now, Paramount, the studio that owns the Turtles, is bringing in the producer of The Fast and the Furious and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises to steer TMNT back into the center of the entertainment universe.

According to reports, Neal H. Moritz is close to finalizing a deal that would have him become the head of the TMNT film series. Moritz is a well-known producer in Hollywood who has worked on The Fast and the Furious franchise since its very beginning in 2001. However, Paramount is likely eyeing him for the Turtles due to the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog films, which are much closer in tone to what the studio wants from TMNT.

The news comes more than 15 years after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which was a box office bomb in 2010. That was the last live-action TMNT movie to be made, though animated films like 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem have shown that there is still life in the franchise.

The expectation is that future TMNT films will be a live-action/animated hybrid similar to Sonic the Hedgehog, with a focus on the kid-friendly movies. A sequel to Mutant Mayhem is due to come out in 2027. The announcement of Moritz taking over as the new head of the live-action TMNT movies has not revealed any future projects, unfortunately.
