All Super Mario Bros. movies and TV shows in order (1983–2026), from Saturday Supercade to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

A complete guide to every Mario movie and series in release and chronological order — including The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the cult 1993 live-action film, and 2026’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

For a video game character who’s been fighting the good fight for more than four decades, Mario has not only managed to keep the Mushroom Kingdom safe from harm, he’s also a multimedia star with a hit movie under his (plumber’s) belt. In fact, he's got more than 40 years of movie and TV appearances at this point. Surprised? We’ve got a list of the Super Mario Bros. movies and TV shows in order to help you keep everything straight.

Super Mario Bros. movies and TV shows in release order

For real, Mario and Luigi have been onscreen almost as long as they’ve been playable characters, even if their resume might seem a little surprising when you dig into it. Here are the Super Mario Bros. movies and TV shows in release order to get you started.

  • Saturday Supercade (1983-1984, Donkey Kong segments)
  • Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! (1986)
  • Amada Anime Series: Super Mario Bros. (1989)
  • The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (1989)
  • Mario Ice Capades (1989)
  • King Koopa’s Kool Kartoons (1989-1990)
  • The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990)
  • The Super Mario Challenge (1990-1991)
  • Super Mario World (1991-1992)
  • Super Mario: ABC Song Video (1992)
  • Super Mario Bros. (1993)
  • Mario Kirby Masterpiece Video (1995)
  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
  • My Mario (2025-)
  • The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026)

Super Mario Bros. movies and TV shows in chronological order

Here’s the thing: there really isn’t a chronological order for the various Super Mario movie and TV projects, because, except for the last animated movies, they’ve been disconnected from each other and produced by entirely different bodies. That said, many of the earlier efforts follow the rough chronology of the games, which at least allows us to build the following models.

Game faithful Super Mario Bros. movies and TV shows in order

  • Saturday Supercade (1983-1984, Donkey Kong segments)
  • Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! (1986)
  • The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (1989)
  • The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990)
  • Super Mario World (1991-1992)

Technically, none of these shows (or, in the case of The Great Mission, a movie) was intended to interact with each other, but in that they all follow the continuity of the games at the time, they hang together as a loose early Mario canon of sorts.

Non-canonical Super Mario Bros. movies and TV shows in order

  • Amada Anime Series: Super Mario Bros. (1989)
  • Mario Ice Capades (1989)
  • King Koopa’s Kool Kartoons (1989-1990)
  • The Super Mario Challenge (1990-1991)
  • Super Mario Bros. (1993)
  • My Mario (2025-)

“Non-canonical” is doing a lot of work here, I admit. Mario Ice Capades, King Koopa’s Kool Kartoons, and The Super Mario Challenge are each live-action TV shows using Mario characters in meta settings, as opposed to actual Mario stories. (As the name suggests, Mario Ice Capades is an ice show with Mario characters; King Koopa’s Kool Kartoons was a Saturday morning show in which Koopa introduces cartoons to kids.) At least Super Mario Bros. was an actual Mario story, albeit a live-action movie that took years to acquire cult status. By comparison, My Mario is a series of short YouTube videos featuring a stop-motion Mario and friends created for kids. Here’s a sample:

Oh, and Amada Anime Series: Super Mario Bros.? That’s an anime that features the Mario characters in versions of famous fairy tales, because…? Okay, I really don’t know why, but it’s a curiosity that nonetheless exists.

Educational Super Mario Bros. movies and TV in order

  • Super Mario’s Fire Brigade (1989)
  • Super Mario Traffic Safety (1989)
  • Super Mario: ABC Song Video (1992)
  • Mario Kirby Masterpiece Video (1995)

Yes, Mario and friends were used for multiple educational videos for a period in Japan. The titles are relatively clear, with the exceptions of the ABC Song Video, which was intended to help Japanese kids learn English, and the Mario Kirby Masterpiece Video, which was intended to help children learn kanji. (And, yes, that’s Kirby as in the Nintendo character; Mario and Kirby didn’t get to interact in the video, however. Sorry, crossover fans.)

Universal/Illumination Super Mario Bros. movies in order

This one is the most straightforward; The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is explicitly a sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the two exist in a canon and continuity all their own.

Super Mario Bros. FAQs

Where can I watch the Super Mario Bros. Movies?

Of the many titles listed above, almost all are unavailable to officially stream, although fan versions for some remain on YouTube. The only two projects released officially to stream are:

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is available to stream on Peacock. My Mario is available on YouTube. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will reach theaters April 1, 2026.

Was 2025 Mario’s 40th anniversary?

This is a complicated question. Mario first appeared as a character in 1981’s Donkey Kong, and continued to make appearances in subsequent Donkey Kong games, so, technically, his 40th anniversary was 2021. 1983 saw the release of the first Mario Bros. Game, but 1985 saw the release of the first game called Super Mario Bros., which was the first appearance of the Mushroom Kingdom and many of the characters and concepts fans think of when it comes to Mario these days. So… 2025 was the 40th anniversary of Super Mario as fans know him, if nothing else…?

(You can find a more detailed guide to Mario's game history right here.)

Will there be a Mario movie 2?

Yes! In fact, not only will there be a Mario movie 2, but it’s almost here. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the follow-up to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, will fly into theaters April 1, 2026.
