Knives Out and Wake Up Dead Man writer/director Rian Johnson knows what the internet is asking for, but he’s not about to deliver it anytime soon — for entirely understandable reasons, as it turns out.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson said, “On the Internet, the notion of a Knives Out Muppet movie comes up a lot, and I wanted to get you guys together here so that I could explain why that’s a bad idea. It’s not a ‘bad idea,’ but I love and respect Muppet movies too much, and also Benoit Blanc movies. They’re so different.”
Sure enough, the idea of Daniel Craig’s outrageously-accented detective solving a whodunnit where everyone else in the cast is a Muppet has periodically been raised almost as long as the Knives Out franchise has been around. (No, really; Knives Out was released November 2019, and the “the rest are played by Muppets” meme went viral a month later.) It’s easy to see why — both the Benoit Blanc movies and the Muppet shows and movies are self-aware celebrity-packed shenanigans that focus on entertaining the viewer while playing with the audience’s expectations… but, according to Johnson, that’s where the similarity ends.
“The reality is, if you put Muppets in a Benoit Blanc movie, it would feel totally wrong because they would be getting murdered,” the writer/director argued. “The alternative is to just stick Benoit Blanc into a Muppet movie, which admittedly would be very fun, but would kind of break the reality of what Blanc is.”
Don’t worry; Johnson had a suggestion to help his crossover refusal go down a little easier. After detailing why there will never be a Muppets Knives Out movie, he added, “Which is all to say: I would just love to do a regular awesome Muppet movie!”
Disney, I just want to let you know: everyone would love to see this happen.
The latest Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, is in theaters now and debuts on Netflix December 12.
