Wicked: For Good is such a hit that we should expect more - but not a sequel, exactly

We probably won't see more of Glinda or Elphaba, but don't expect studios to turn down the chance for more Wicked movies in the future.

Now that Wicked: For Good is out in cinemas, fans are throwing themselves into the musical once again. The sequel has broken several box office records originally set by the previous movie, Wicked, in 2024. That is going to get studios talking about their favorite topic of all – potential sequels. Now, one of the writers of the original Wicked stage musical has admitted he is working on something new in the same world. Not a sequel, but something “adjunct.”

Stephen Schwartz has had a long career with Wicked. He was the music and lyrics writer for the original stage play and has even written a new song for Wicked: For Good to help everyone get to know Glinda a bit better. Following the New York premiere of Wicked: For Good, Schwartz was asked about the possibility of a sequel, but he wasn’t keen on the idea. “If there were a right idea, but I’m just not sure that that right idea exists.”

Does that mean we won’t see anything else from Oz? Never say never. “What I will tell you without giving too much away is that Winnie Holzman [writer of the book version of the Wicked musical] and I are doing some work right now on ideas that aren’t a sequel to Wicked, because I think the Glinda and Elphaba story feels complete – but there are other aspects that could be explored. Gregory Maguire, the original Wicked novelist, has several books, for example. But there’s another idea that Winnie and I are discussing: not a sequel, but an adjunct. Let me put it that way.”

Oz is certainly a land full of stories, so it isn’t surprising that people want to explore them. The comments come as Wicked: For Good opened to more than $226 million at the global box office, earning more in its opening weekend than Wicked and even out-performing Moana 2 at the US box office and clocking in the second largest opening weekend of 2025, after A Minecraft Movie. So if there is any chance to bring more Wicked sequels out, even if they aren’t true sequels, studios will find a way. The yellow brick road that is a demand for profits demands it.
