The next X-Men movies will be very different from what came before - but filled with all the soap opera of the comics

The X-Men comics are basically just a soap opera with superpowers and that's what makes them great.

The introduction of the X-Men to the MCU has been a long time in the making, but it comes with a lot of baggage. The X-Men films, with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine at their core, have had their highs and lows over the years, but they remain in the public’s image of comic book films. According to the person writing the new X-Men film from Marvel Studios, the MCU wants to move away from what people expect from the franchise and embrace the beautiful soap opera vibes of the original comics.

The X-Men movie isn’t the first superhero team Lee Sung Jin has worked on recently. He was brought in to help get the script for Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers over the finish line. Now, he is co-writing the screenplay for Marvel Studios’ X-Men film. However, the studio is taking a very different approach to their mutant heroes.

“I’d say there were actually more parameters on Thunderbolts because it was plugging into an existing arc and existing characters,” Lee Sung Jin said in a recent interview. “Whereas with X-Men, Kevin [Feige] just wants to take a big swing and start anew, not be beholden to any of the movies that have come before. And Jake Schreier has such a clear vision in terms of wanting to get back to character first, and to what is exciting about those early [Chris] Claremont-run comics, which was all about team dynamics. There were a lot of soapy elements to those comics.”

That is good news for fans who know that the best parts of X-Men have always been the awkward way that everyone loves, hates, and sleeps together. If the MCU script can lean into that soap opera dynamic, it will make for a more fun, entertaining dynamic.
