Watch Marc Ellerby teach you how to draw Rick and Morty (and explain the importance of patience for creators, too)

Ellerby's MCM Birmingham 2023 panel isn't just an art tutorial, but a lesson for all wannabe creators

British comic book creator Marc Ellerby may not be a household name (yet), but it’s a fair bet that audiences are very familiar with his work on titles including Doctor Who, Dungeons and Dragons, The Amazing World of Gumball, and perhaps most famously, Oni Press’ Rick and Morty.

It’s that last project that drew fans to a panel at MCM Birmingham in December 2023, as Ellerby took to the stage for the How to Draw Rick and Morty with Marc Ellerby panel — and now Popverse readers can see the panel for themselves.

Beyond simply showing fans how to draw the fan-favorite characters from the hit animated series, Ellerby also talks about his career, and the unexpected routes it’s taken. His Doctor Who work, he explains, “kind of saved my career a little,” coming at a time when he was considering quitting comics and, as he puts it, getting “a real job.” “So… don’t give up,” he says. “There will always be an email that comes out the blue, where someone somewhere says, ‘Do you want to draw X?’ And you’ll be like, ‘I do want to draw X.’”

Take a look at the video below to see Ellerby explain it all, and draw some very familiar faces as he does so.
