Popverse's top stories of the day

We've known since the Toho Animation panel at Anime Expo 2023 that we would be getting a new Spice & Wolf anime in the near future, but we weren't quite sure what form it would take. At least, not until a recent announcement by the team behind it. Now we know that Spice & Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf will be a new anime series. More than that, we now know we don't have long to wait until we see it.

Based on Isuna Hasekura’s series of light novels, Spice & Wolf is the story of a traveling merchant and the 600-year-old wolf goddess who travels with him across a fantasy world. The first anime’s beautiful animation quickly made it a fan-favorite and we’re expecting more of the same when the new show airs in April 2024.

Along with the trailer above, the team behind the new series posted a poster for Spice & Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf to social media, along with news that Takeo Takahashi would be the series’ chief director. The announcement didn’t specify if the new Spice & Wolf anime would be a continuation, remake, or something else. It simply offered the taglines “Shall we embark on a journey again?” and “Holo the Wisewolf and Lawrence the Merchant’s story continues” which seems to imply it will be a sequel series. However, the title feels more like a remake, so we don’t know for sure just yet. Crunchyroll is expected to stream the series for international audiences, though we haven’t seen if the original dub cast will return.

Whatever the series ends up being, it brings with it plenty of expectations. The Spice & Wolf light novel series has been going since 2006 and has amassed an impressive 24 volumes so far. In addition to the 2008 anime series, it has spawned several video games and a manga adaptation so far.
