Even before the first Star Wars movie made it to theaters, there’s been a Star Wars comic. (No, really; the first issue was released before the movie.) In the following four decades, the connection between Star Wars and comic books has stayed strong, with the medium often being the most reliable place to find stories set in a galaxy far, far away, and even today, with Star Wars on Disney+ and prepping for a return to the big screen in 2026, there’s still a steady stream of Star Wars comic books from multiple publishers out there.
May 2024 is a perfect example of what makes Star Wars comics so special even as the franchise grows in other media: there are ways in which comics can mark the 25th anniversary of the release of Episode I: The Phantom Menace that few other media could manage, with multiple new stories set during that time period seeing release throughout the month from both Marvel and Dark Horse Comics, for multiple different age groups. And if that’s not your particular brand of Star Wars, don’t worry — there’s still a lot of High Republic and Original Trilogy-era stories to tell, as well!
