Miyazaki's hit film The Boy and The Heron will be streaming on Netflix (but not for all of us)

Prepare for the dreaded "Video not available in your territory" message.

If you missed out on seeing The Boy and The Heron when it was working its way through theaters, the wait for the film to make its way to streaming services has been a long one. Now, at least we know where Hayao Miyazaki’s potentially – but probably not – final film will be streaming as Netflix announces that their global deal to carry Studio Ghibli movies has been extended.

The news comes just weeks after The Boy and The Heron walked away with the Oscar for Best Animated Picture. Netflix will continue to be the streaming home for Studio Ghibli films for the foreseeable future and will be the first place to stream The Boy and The Heron in most territories. The three places that are excluded from the deal are the US, Canada, and Japan.

Anime fans in the US and Canada will need to turn elsewhere to see The Boy and The Heron. There hasn’t been an official announcement yet, but we expect that the movie will land on Max eventually as they have the rest of the Studio Ghibli collection in their library.

When will The Boy and The Heron make its way to Netflix? We don’t know that just yet. The announcement just says “an announcement of the Netflix streaming premiere date to be made later this year.” Considering it only left cinemas in many territories in December, we expect it won’t be until at least June 2024 that The Boy and The Heron will be available for streaming on Netflix.
