Mephisto might not have been Agatha All Along's villain, but he did "distract" viewers from guessing the end
Marvel fans Marveling about a potential Mephisto appearance distracted fans from the bigger picture of Agatha All Along, and showrunner Jac Schaeffer is grateful for that

Ever since the defeat of Thanos in 2019's Avengers: Endgame (maybe even before?), MCU fans have been wondering if Marvel Comics' Mephisto will eventually make his Hellish way into their favorite cinematic universe. Last year, in the Halloweenish Agatha All Along, we got our first MCU-canon reference to the Marvel version of the Satan of legend, though the character hardly featured beyond that moment. However, according to a recent chat with Agatha's showrunner, Jac Schaeffer, the character did serve an importance to the show:
He kept fans from guessing the actual ending.
Schaeffer was a recent guest at PaleyFest LA 2025, where she and a host of the Agatha cast took the stage to talk about Marvel's witchiest TV show. During the course of the discussion, moderator Ash Crossnan asked Schaeffer if there were any easter eggs or show secrets that she was surprised to find fans caught. Actually, Schaeffer responded, the opposite happened.
"One thing I did think," the showrunner answered, "[Was that] people were going to figure out earlier that Billy made the road."
Schaeffer says that she caught "little tweets here and there" that theorized over Billy’s creation of the infamous Witches’ Road, the central trial that Agatha and her coven face in the series. For the most part, fans were too focused on the devilish character’s mention to catch the truth of the mystical pathway.
"People were were distracted by Mephisto," she said, "And they were distracted by Ralph Bohner."
In case you’re wondering, Bohner was the citizen of Westview, played by Evan Peters, that Agatha tricked Wanda into believing was her dead brother Pietro in WandaVision. And also in case you’re wondering, yes, Schaeffer saying "Bohner" did get an audience laugh.
"So it worked out," Schaeffer continued, "Because there was such close viewership that people weren't seeing the sort of bigger picture. It was after [episode] six that it started to percolate in a real way. Megan McDonnell, who's a consulting producer on the show, has really great instincts about what the audience should think and feel. So I would text her and be like 'Are we on track; is this right?' She'd be like 'This is perfect.'"
Perfection indeed, all thanks to one Marvelous Devil and one confusing Bohner.
Agatha All Along is streaming now on Disney+.
