Alien icon Sigourney Weaver prefers Alien: Earth to the movies

FX's Noah Hawley-created Alien series is "more profound" than an Alien movie, says Ellen Ripley herself. We ask: More profound than that basketball scene in Resurrection?

Ellen Ripley loves the new Alien.

No, I'm not recounting that weird pseudo-horniness of Alien: Resurrection, I'm talking about the franchise's most iconic face, Sigourney Weaver, praising its most recent project, Noah Hawley's Alien: Earth on FX. Recently, scifi legend (and NYCC '25 guest!) Weaver spoke about her love of the series, and much to your average xenomorph fan's surprise, what she felt the show does better than its cinematic predecessors.

The quote comes from an interview the actor behind franchise's main character, the aforementioned Ripley, did with People, in which Weaver revealed that she is both watching and adoring the new Alien show. "The monsters that [Hawley]'s also bringing in," raved the actor, "Are just terrifying. It's like, we don't have enough problems with the alien, we need 50 more [...] I can't believe I'm watching TV."

But it's not just the monsters themselves that impact Alien's most-involved fan, it's the themes of the show.

"What I admire about it," Weaver said, "Is the scope is so much more profound than just an Alien movie, [...] It's about our world and what's dominating the world in 100 years, and to me it's right on."

In case you haven't watched it yet, a great deal of the Alien: Earth premise is that, in the not-too-distant future, the planet is controlled by unchecked megacorporations, who play god whenever it means lining their wallets with just a little more cash. That sounds "right on" to us as well, Sigourney.

Alien: Earth airs new episodes every Tuesday night on Hulu. We recommend watching, and we imagine Ripley does too.
