The last thing we need in our lives is one more streaming service subscription, and in that logistical and financial dance Apple TV+ ends up the odd one out for many people. As it preps to try to revive its #1 show ever after ending it a year prior (that would be Ted Lasso, of course) and the planned widespread theatrical release of its big budget Brad Pitt/George Clooney movie Wolfs got cancelled, Apple has made a deal to make its Apple TV+ shows and movies easier to watch.
As first written about by the Hollywood Reporter's Alex Weprin, Apple has partnered with Amazon to have its Apple TV+ streaming service available as a paid add-on to Amazon's Prime Video service, similar to deals already in place for Warner Bros. Discovery's Max, as well as Paramount+, Starz, and Crunchyroll. If you sign up, you'll be charged through Amazon Prime monthly as you would for anything else.
(Yes, Prime Video is slowly becoming a cable company.)
You can't go right now to get this - but THR says the Amazon cable guy will have everything hooked up for you to do this by the end of October 2024.
Why is Apple partnering with Amazon?
Apple is upfront about the reason why it's doing this - they don't thinking having shows exclusively on the Apple TV+ app is reaching as many people as they hoped.
"We want to make Apple TV+ and its award-winning library of series and films from the world’s greatest storytellers available to as many viewers as possible," said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of services, in a statement. "We’re thrilled that Prime Video will now offer Apple TV+, giving viewers an incredible breadth of viewing options."
In this move, Apple TV+ will suddenly become available to nine times the viewers as it would prior to it. Digital Trends previously reported that Apple TV+ has a 25 million user base, while Amazon's Prime Video has 200m.
What does this Apple TV+ / Amazon Prime Video deal mean for us viewers?
Basically, it makes watching TV you want to watch easier. Whereas before when there was something you wanted to watch and it was on Apple TV+ you had to see If the service was available on your set-top box, then download the app, then set-up an account and give it your payment info. Now, the 200 million people who have Amazon Prime Video can simply click the 'Apple TV+' button on that service, then input their four-digit passcode, and begin watching within a minute.
