How did Severance’s Ricken and Devon get together? Jen Tullock and Michael Chernus have some theories

Severance’s Jen Tullock and Michael Chernus discuss Ricken and Devon’s unconventional marriage

Have you ever looked at a mismatched couple and wondered how they got together? It’s a question Michael Chernus and Jen Tullock often get. Their Severance characters Ricken Hale and Devon Scout-Hale seem to be different personality types, operating on completely opposite wavelengths. What brought a couple like that together?

“It’s a funny story. It was at a key party,” Michael Chernus jokes during an appearance at PaleyFest LA 2025. “We both went home with other people, but it worked out in the end,” Jen Tullock adds.

“What happens between two people in private is private,” Chernus continues. “Behind closed the doors, we’ve talked about it a lot. One of the things that kind of drives me crazy is when people say, ‘I don’t understand Devon and Ricken.’ Have you ever been to an airport and seen people together? Have you ever met a couple in your life? They’re weird. Opposites attract.”

“We’re also in a moment in time,” Tullock says. “I think there was probably a moment where maybe they did try a little harder to keep up appearances. But you get to the point where you fart in front of your partner, then it’s all over. That’s it. They’re well past that point.”

Severance is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
