Severance season 2 ending explained: Adam Scott, Britt Lower, and Dichen Lachman break down the jaw-dropping hallway scene

The Severance cast reveal what was going through their heads as they filmed the season two finale

Severance has always been an emotionally intense show, but the season two finale took things to a new level. As Mark (Adam Scott) and Gemma (Dichen Lachman) prepare to escape Lumon for good, Mark chooses to stay behind with Helly (Britt Lower). The dramatic turning point was just as intense for the actors as it was for the audience.

“It was tough. It was exhausting,” Adam Scott says during an appearance at PaleyFest LA 2025. “It was right at the end of the shoot, so we were all kind of depleted and tired, which was good for the scene. It was heartbreaking because Dichen was really pounding on that door for hours and hours, and it was awful. It was awful to see her there, and what Gemma has come to mean to all of us.”

“It was just heartbreaking, but I think for Mark at the end of the day, this is someone he doesn’t know in that way. And he crosses that threshold, and his life might be over, he doesn’t quite know. And he’s madly in love with Helly, so he had to make a choice for a few different reasons,” Scott continues.

“I guess on the surface it looks like a triangle, but if you know me, I love talking about shapes. It might be a tetrahedron or a hexagonal prism. To add complexity, maybe in that last moment, Helly, it’s love at first sight seeing Gemma across the hallway. I don’t know,” Britt Lower jokes.

Dichen Lachman then gave her thoughts on Gemma’s state of mind. “I think initially she’s just very confused, and then very quickly realizes that he’s probably been going through this procedure when she sees him. It all has to happen really fast, and I think ultimately, she’s just trying to get through to him, breaking through that barrier, but sadly she fails,” Dichen Lachman says.

Severance has been renewed for a third season, so it will be interesting to see how they build off the explosive finale. As of this writing, there is no release date, but the next season is likely to stream on Apple TV+ sometime in 2026.
