It’s the 20th Anniversary of Avatar: The Last Airbender and while Nickelodeon is celebrating looking backward at San Diego Comic-Con, they’re also looking forward. Unfortunately there was no footage shown of anything in the works, but Avatar Studios is hard at work on multiple projects. The one thing they were able to give a visual on was a still from the upcoming series, Seven Havens.
The image features the next Earthbender after Korra, named Pavi and her mentor Jae with the city of Aurora cast in the background. Seven Havens is a 2D animated series that centers around the aftermath of a devastating world event that throws both the mortal and spirit realms into mayhem. The survivors are skeptical of the Avatar, while residing in one of the seven havens.
There have always been animals or creature sidekicks featured in the storytelling, whether it’s Momo or Appa. This creature is called Geet, and is a fantasy cat-monkey that’s based on one of DiMartino’s actual cats.
Even though it was announced earlier this year, the biggest applause from the crowd came when they flashed their upcoming Legend of Aang film, October 9 ,2026. They did say the film would be directed by Avatar series veteran Lauren Montgomery (Voltron: Legendary Defender).
“We can't show you anything from this yet,” teased producer Mike DiMartino. “But I can tell you the footage that has been animated, there is nothing that looks like this. It's 2D animation, which is really good!”
DeMartino then listed a laundry list of Avatar licensed books and consumer products. From their publishing wing, they have the Avatar: The Last Airbender Official Baking Book, an oversized book from Dark Horse which is titled, The Beast of the Four Nations, which is an encyclopedia of the animals in the Avatar universe.
In case you didn’t know, Avatar has a series a young adult novels that featured Roku, the Yangchen and Kyoshi. “This series follows other characters in our universe,” teased DeMartino. “In City of Echos is a cool story about Jin who went out on a date with Zuko once. Apparently there’s a whole backstory on that.”
“Avatar Legends is more like middle grade kind of chapter books about a bunch of friends at a Fire Academy that takes place in a different era (than the show).”
A big project for the artists of Avatar studios is their Magic the Gathering game. There’s been hundreds and hundreds of cards in the initial set. Neither creator plays Magic but it’s a massive endeavor.
“And I did one of the cards,” added co-creator Bryan Konietzko. “It’s a special powered one. As you can tell, I don't play either.” Konietzko was showing off a new digital watercolor style to his quick drawings of the Avatar characters as the cast did live panel reads as stills of the watercolors were projected on the screen.
On the video game front, joining the Roblox family at the end of August and DiMartino said that the animated Roblox version of bending looks really cool. It's scheduled to come out at the end of August.
Even though the magic of the original series is long past, its legacy continues to live on in future generations as it gets ready for a big boost in 2026.
