HBO’s Baldur’s Gate TV show taps Chris Perkins of Critical Role’s Darrington Press as a consultant
Chris Perkins was Head of Story on D&D for years, but his current role with Critical Role means that no one from Wizards of the Coast seems to be directly involved in the series.

The news that we’re getting a TV adaptation of Baldur’s Gate 3 is big for fans, who are deeply (and sometimes disturbingly) passionate about the game. While we don’t have many details about the show other than it is being developed by the same person behind the live-action The Last of Us series, we do know who is making sure they get the D&D lore right, and it isn’t anyone at Wizards of the Coast. No, HBO is bringing in Chris Perkins, the former WotC Head of Story, who recently jumped to Critical Role’s Darrington Press.
Between kickstarting the D&D casual play genre, Chris Perkins was the Head of Story for Dungeons & Dragons at Wizards of the Coast, putting him in charge of mapping out the storytelling aspect of the roleplaying game. So it isn’t surprising that HBO is bringing Perkins on board for the Baldur’s Gate television series, which is being developed by The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin. However, what is slightly surprising is that Perkins left the D&D team back in 2025 to join Darrington Press, the publishing company started by Critical Role.
While Hasbro, the parent company of Wizards of the Coast, is represented among the Baldur’s Gate executive producers, it isn’t clear if anyone currently working at Wizards of the Coast is actively involved in a TV show based on one of their best-known properties. This isn’t to say Chris Perkins isn’t uniquely qualified to serve as a consultant on Baldur’s Gate, but we expected the owners of the D&D brand to be visibly involved.
Baldur’s Gate is currently in production and will serve as a sequel to the events of Baldur’s Gate 3 rather than a direct adaptation of that game’s plot.
