The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey sees Ellie as who they are in their own head, despite Ellie's very different ability to express anger
Ellie's anger is always bubbling up to the surface, especially in season two of The Last of Us, something that is a big contrast to Bella Ramsey.

Acting is sometimes a complicated process of bringing parts of yourself to the surface that you don’t often show. For Bella Ramsey, who has portrayed the angry and impulsive Ellie in the first two seasons of The Last of Us, it has been about tapping into those emotions that they aren’t as good at expressing and even trying to find a version of themselves they know is inside them, waiting to get out.
Bella Ramsey gave insight into their portrayal while appearing on The Louis Theroux Podcast this week. When asked if Ellie was somewhere inside them, Ramsey nodded and said, “I think Ellie is who I imagine I am in my head… Having emotions that close to the surface is something that I sort of, like, dream about.”
Ramsey went on to explain that they struggle with controlling themselves all the time, which is part of the reason why they’ve never been drunk; the most they’ve been is a “bit tipsy.” This is an obvious contrast to her character in The Last of Us. “Ellie is much more… she doesn’t, like, think before she speaks and she doesn’t think before she does. She’s impulsive. She’s very angry and anger is an emotion, to me, that’s quite inwards. I don’t express any anger that I have… The ability of someone like Ellie, where she doesn’t have that ability. It just comes out. I kind of love that about her and I love getting to portray that.”
We’ll get to see more of Ellie’s anger through Bella Ramsey as The Last of Us season two continues to air on Max.
