Black Mirror season 8 is already being written, reveals creator Charlie Brooker

Charlie Brooker might have departed the production company responsible for making the anthology series Black Mirror, but he's still writing the new season for Netflix

Charlie Brooker might have left the company responsible for bringing Black Mirror to Netflix, but he’s not left Black Mirror as its showrunner — and, in fact, he’s already at work on an eighth season of the anthology series, he’s revealed.

“Well, luckily it does have a future, so I can confirm that Black Mirror will return, just in time for reality to catch up with it,” Brooker told Netflix’s Tudum in a recent interview. “So, that’s exciting. That chunk of my brain has already been activated and is whirring away.”

Understandably, he’s not talking about what kinds of stories audiences should be expecting from the new season just yet, but he is willing to go on record on one particular genre the show won’t be tackling this time around — well, unless something changes dramatically.

“It’s a useful thought experiment when approaching a new story. I’ll often think of, ‘Well, what haven’t we done yet, and what tone am I looking for?'" he said. "'Where does this track come on the album, and what musical direction are we going to go into?’ We’ll find out. Very unlikely you’ll ever see a Black Mirror hoedown.”

Look, we’re just saying: there’s a great Black Mirror country episode to be made at some point. Just get Miley Cyrus (from season 5’s ‘Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too’ episode) to convince her dad to sign on as the star.

Black Mirror is streaming on Netflix now.
